But at the end of the book there is little doubt that Hayduke Lives! Marcus rated it did not like it Nov 21, Enter Bishop Love, a fat Mormon cattleman and despoiler of the Earth. I can only take so many adjectives describing one of Hayduke’s hideouts or so many nouns to capture the word for an oil drilling machine.
His love for nature and extreme distrust of the industrial world influenced much hyaduke his work and helped garner a cult following.
As advertised, he was a wilderness avenger, industrial development saboteur, nighttime troublemaker and barroom brawler. Yet he contains himself, just, to the story in hand and lets George do the dirty work in his own inimitable style.
Abbey is dearly missed and I don’t know who fills his much needed role today. The follow-up to the eco-warrior’s bible The Monkey-Wrench Gang has our heroes once again coming to the rescue of the fragile and over-grazed southwest Abbey’s beloved lands which are once again being sold and perverted for the short term gains of profiteers so it goes and has been going for as long as we can remember–i note that Franzen borrowed a bit on this theme as well for Freedom.

At least with Cujo I read it from cover to cover but this poor excuse of a sequel I cannot even bring to words my disappointment. You will be laughing as you read about the Earth First!

It is the Promised Land of abundant edwadr and resources that invites exploitation. I wasnt very fond of Abby’s excessive examples throughout the book. The characters haven’t really developed any further, there is basically no story line, and the Abbeyesque descriptions go on a little too long.
And we should not forget his spirit.
Too many loose ends at times. To visit the region involved would without a doubt complete lves picture painted, but the book is by no means a failure.
I ended up just skimming this book as I just couldn’t get interested in the plot or characters.
